POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team let a one-run lead slip away in the final inning as the Marist Red Foxes walked off on a sacrifice fly to complete a doubleheader sweep by the scores of 7-3 and 3-2.
Game One: Marist 7, Fairfield 3
Mitch Williams led the Stags (17-23, 7-10 MAAC) with a 4-for-5 day but the Stags would allow four runs in the fifth and would never fully make the comeback.
Williams would open up the scoring for the Stags with his second double of the game to lead off the fourth. He would later score on a
Drew Blake sacrifice fly. Williams continued his hot hitting in the fifth when he drove in
Jack Gethings with a RBI single.
After allowing Marist (21-15, 10-4 MAAC) to take the lead with a four spot in the fifth, the Stags nearly tied the game.
Kevin Radziewicz would drive in
Tom Ryan with a RBI single, but the Red Foxes were able to gun down the potential tying run at home.
The four hit day was the second for Williams since moving the three-hole three games ago. In those three games, he was batting .667 (10-for-15) and slugging 1.000. Radziewicz, Gethings, and
Ian Halpin also tallied multi-hit games.
Game Two: Marist 3, Fairfield 2
John Signore became the fourth Stag in program history to record 200 career strikeouts after fanning Randy Taveras in the fourth. Signore was part of a scoreless pitcher's duel that lasted until the sixth inning when
Drew Arciuolo hustled to third on a three-base throwing error.
That gave an opportunity for Williams to deliver, which he did with team-best fourth sacrifice fly of the year. The Stags would add on to their lead when
Dan Ryan drove in Radziewicz, to put the score at 2-0.
Marist would begin chipping away with a run in the sixth but would find new life in the seventh. After a single, pinch hitter Chris Tracz took an 0-2 count to right with a single, bringing Matt Iantosca to third. Anthony Lazar would tie the game on a successful safety squeeze. The Stags would intentionally load the bases, but Greg Kocinski would end the game on a sacrifice fly.
Making the start in the nightcap,
Tim Zeng went 2-for-3, joining
Dan Ryan as the two Stags with multi-hits.
The Stags and the Red Foxes will conclude their series tomorrow at noon.
