POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Three-straight RBI hits by the Fairfield University Baseball team in the first inning set the tone for the afternoon as the Stags salvaged the final game of their series with Marist by a 7-5 final score.
Drew Arciuolo led the Stags with four hits, his 199th of his career as he closes in on becoming the eighth player in program history to reach that number.
Arciuolo would be the first Stags (18-23, 8-10 MAAC) to score a run as he was driven in by
Kevin Radziewicz's RBI double. That base hit would be followed by a RBI double by
Drew Blake and RBI single by
Dan Ryan to spot Fairfield a 3-0 lead.
The Stags would add to that advantage in the fifth when
Jack Gethings and Arciuolo started off the inning with singles. Radziewicz would bring in Gethings with his second run scoring hit of the afternoon and Blake would cap the two-run frame with a sacrifice fly.
Marist (21-16, 10-5 MAAC) got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Stags added two more runs in the top of the sixth.
Tim Zeng started the rally with a triple and
Tom Ryan brought him home with an infield single. Arciuolo gained his first RBI of the day with a run scoring double.
The Stags would be able to hold on to that lead despite Marist's best comeback attempt, which involved two runs in the sixth and two in the ninth.
David Sacco would end the Marist comeback as the senior got Frankie Gregoire to fly out representing the tying run.
Austin Pope got the win for the Stags after hurling 6.1 quality innings that featured eight strikeouts. Pope would not allow a run until the Red Foxes scratched across a run in the fifth.
Arciuolo was one of five Stag with multi-hits as he led the way with four. Radziewicz tallied three while Gethings,
Dan Ryan, and
Tom Ryan all picked up a pair.
The Stags are back in action on Tuesday at Alumni Diamond against NJIT at 3:30pm.
