FAIRFAX, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team surrendered seven runs in both ends of a doubleheader and dropped both games to George Mason (7-5, 7-1).
Jack Gethings,
Drew Arciuolo,
Tim Zeng, and
Eric Cerno all tallied three hits in the two games combined.
Game One:
George Mason scored a run in each of the first three innings and four in the seventh to grab a sizable lead that the Stags could not fully comeback from. Fairfield did make a comeback effort, scoring the game's final four runs highlighted by a
Drew Blake two RBI double in the eighth. Cerno also added a run scoring hit in the frame.
The Stags had their biggest chance in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases and scored a run with two walks, three-straight wild pitches, and a passed ball. Fairfield had the bases loaded and nobody out, but Patriots' reliever freshman Austin Cabone was able to stop the threat.
Eli Oliphant had an impressive performance, allowing just one hit in the final 1.2 innings of the game. In the final inning,
Dan Ryan would score on a double play ball for the 7-5 final score.
Game Two:
The Stags tallied nine hits in the series finale, but could only plate one run on a
Mitch Williams homer in the seventh. Fairfield would strand six runners in the second game, beginning with a bases loaded one out opportunity in the first.
Zeng led off the game with a single and Arciuolo followed with a walk.
Kevin Radziewicz would also single to load the bases, but George Mason starter Jared Dicesare was able to force an inning ending double play.
The Patriots tallied five runs on RBI singles from Logan Driscoll, Trevor Kelly, and John Callahan. The Fairfield bullpen would allow just five hits the rest of the way with
Josh Arnold and
Ian Halpin combining to throw four shutout innings.
With their three hits, Cerno (.436) and Gethings (.407) both keep their season average over .400.
The Stags will next start their annual spring break trip when they travel to North Florida for a three-game series starting on Saturday, March 10 at 1pm.
