FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Siena as the Stags were shutout 5-0 in the opener before taking a 4-2 decision in the nightcap. With the results, both the Stags and the Saints move their record to 7-7 in the conference, placing them in fifth.
Game One – Siena 5 Fairfield 0
The Stags (15-20, 7-7 MAAC) were shutout for the first time this season, despite scattering 11 hits and stranding 12 runners. Siena pitcher Tommy Miller hurled his fourth complete game of the season, needing 145 pitches for the nine-inning shutout.
Siena (9-27, 7-7 MAAC) opened the scoring in the first frame on a Jordan Bishop RBI single. The Saints would add two runs in the fourth and on each in the seventh and ninth innings.
The Stags threatened all game long but could not get the big hit when they needed. The Stags stranded the bases loaded in the second and then would get at least one runner on in every inning going forward.
Miller would allow 11 hits by nine different players, with
Ian Halpin and
Dan Ryan leading the team with two hits apiece.
Game Two – Fairfield 4 Siena 2
Fairfield finally got the big hit they were waiting for in the first inning of the nightcap. After Siena struck for two runs on back-to-back doubles in the first, the Stags responded by recording six hits in their first at-bats. The first three Stags tallied singles, with
Jack Gethings driving in a run with his base knock. Fairfield would load the bases for
Drew Blake who poked a line drive over the third base bag, clearing the bases and giving the Stags a 4-2 lead.
John Signore would not allow a run the rest of the way as he dueled with Siena's Brendan White for the rest of the seven innings. In total, Signore would hurl seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and five strikeouts. Signore would punch out his fifth batter to end the game.
Siena's biggest threat against the eight hander came in the third inning when they loaded the bases via two Fairfield errors, but Signore got the batter to fly out to centerfield.
Blake led the Stags with two hits, joining
Mitch Williams as the only players with a pair of base knocks.
The win was Signore fifth of the season and 15th in his career, placing him 13th in the Fairfield record book.
The Stags and the Saints will play in the rubber game tomorrow at noon.
