Stags Shutout in Series Finale

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team were limited to four hits in the series finale as they were shutout by Siena 6-0 in the rubber match of the three game set. The two teams were locked into a 1-0 pitcher's duel until Saints slugger Joe Drpich blew the game open with a grand slam in the seventh.

Fairfield's (15-21, 7-8 MAAC) Austin Pope hurled six innings during his fifth start of the season, surrendering just one run coming in the third inning. On the other side of the ledger, Siena's (10-27) Ryan Bellomo tossed seven scoreless innings for the Saints while striking out nine in his first start of the season.

Fairfield would not tally their first hit until the fifth inning, coming on a Tyler Gambardella single down the left field line. Despite not getting their first base hit until the middle of the game, the Stags had at least one base runner reach in all but two innings. The Stags would strand seven runners and hit into a double play in the afternoon.

The only run that Pope surrendered came in the third with Marcos Campos hitting a one-out double and would later score on a sacrifice fly from Phil Madonna.

That 1-0 score would stay until the seventh when Siena scored five runs, highlighted by the grand slam off the bat of Drpich.

Fairfield tallied four hits by four different players with Gambardella, Drew Blake, Mitch Williams, and Nick Esposito all recording a hit. For Esposito, it was his first collegiate base hit.

The loss brings Fairfield's conference record to 7-8, currently in sixth place in the MAAC standings.

The Stags are back in action on Alumni Diamond on Tuesday for a 3:30pm contest against crosstown rivals Sacred Heart.
