Brown Hits Gold, Stags Win Home Opener

Box Score

Sophomore Brenna Brown (North Salem, N.Y.) dribbled along the top of the box and fired a shot into goal in overtime to lift the Fairfield Stags women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Maine Black Bears.  The win extends the Stags home-unbeaten streak to 15, which ties the longest streak in program history.

“I got the ball at the corner of the 18 about and I just looked up and there was a gap in the defense,” Brown said.  “I took a touch and just shot it far post like Sean [Driscoll] taught me and got a lucky deflection I think.”

Fairfield (2-1) had all three shots in the overtime and nearly ended the contest in the 94th minute when Ashley Small (Melville, N.Y.) fired a shot on the near post but the line drive was caught by goalkeeper Lauren Swant.

The Stags were the first team to get on the board when Cassidy Boegel (Sudbury, Mass.) took a feed from Molly Moran and struck a 15-yard shot for her first goal of the season.  Boegel took five shots in the contest, with four being on goal.  For the season, six of her 10 shots have been targeted for goal.

“Cassidy is really a blossoming star,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien said.  “I think she's really starting to hit a stride, her fitness level has improved from last year and I think she's going to be a force goal scoring for us now and in the future.”

Less than ten minutes after Fairfield broke the scoreless draw, Maine (1-2) tied the contest when Charlene Achille scored off her own rebound to knot the game at one.  The Stags did have a chance towards the end of regulation when Boegel got open past the defender but her shot was lined to the keeper.

Both teams started off the evening attacking from both sides.  The two teams combined for 16 shots, with ten going the way of the Stags.  Fairfield's best opportunity came in the 16th minute when Pam Coufos' (North Andover, Mass.) strike hit off the crossbar.

The Black Bears also was inches away from getting the lead just five minutes before the end of the half when Eve L'Abbe's long shot from the near side struck the top of the crossbar.

Kathleen Early picked up a season-high four saves in the contest with her most impressive coming in the 18th minute when Jordan Pellerin snuck past the defense and fired an open shot right to Early.  Maine's Claudia Dube-Trempe recorded seven saves in her 90 minutes before subbing out for Swant in overtime.

For the game, the Stags tallied a season-high 20 shots compared to 11 for Maine.  Fairfield had seven corner kicks while Maine had three.

“I think it's important, you have so much confidence and pride when it's your home field,” Coufos said.  “It's good to make sure you keep that when you're playing for your team and the name of your school.  So it's good to win at home.

The Stags will look to set a new program record, and stretch their home-unbeaten streak to 16 games Sunday afternoon against Hartford.  The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
