FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With a pair of wins in its pocket, the Fairfield University men's soccer team will turn its focus to Brown University as the Ivy League foe comes to campus for a Monday match up with the Stags. Game time is slated for 7 pm at Lessing Field.
Both teams enter the Labor Day meeting with unblemished records – the Bears holding a 1-0 mark after defeating the College of the Holy Cross in the season opener and the Stags sporting a 2-0 mark after wins against Army West Point and Monmouth University. This match marks the first road date for Brown while Fairfield completes its brief two-game home stand.'
Head Coach
Krystian Witkowski witnessed his team put together a solid all-around effort against Monmouth, scoring three times and picking up its first clean sheet of the young season. Newcomer
Cameron Gerber set up all three goals to become the first Stag to accomplish that task since the 2019 campaign. The junior created opportunities that were finished by
Sean Albritton,
Alex Vaz, and
William Pierce.
Albritton's goal proved to be the game winner, his second in his two appearances with the Stags. Vaz equaled his teammate's accomplishment with his second goal of the season, making the two freshmen responsible for four of the team's five goals. Pierce, who was the team's top scorer a year ago, posted his 12
th career goal at Fairfield to close out the scoring, a brilliant header off a cross from Gerber.
Not to be overlooked, the Stags defense put forth another stellar effort by closing down all scoring chances established by Monmouth earlier in the week. Although the Hawks took 17 shots in the match, only seven required service by goalkeeper
Evan Chomow. The first-year Stag was in position to make three saves in the first half and four more over the final 45 minutes of the contest, raising his season total to nine stops.
Brown began its campaign with a 2-1 decision over Holy Cross, needing just four minutes into the new season to score its first goal. Greyson Mitchell built the scoring play with a pass to Mads Stistrup Petersen at the 3:45 mark to put the Bears in front. Holy Cross found the equalizer eight minutes later to bring the score to 1-1.
The game appeared poised to finish in a draw as the two opponents played scoreless soccer into the closing minutes. Brown collected the deciding goal in the 87
th minute after Jamin Gogo Peters sent the ball into the back of the net. Henrik Weiper made the goal stand as the goalkeeper finished his 90 minutes with a pair of saves.
Fairfield will return to the road after the Brown match, heading to Lafayette College on September 6 for a 2 pm game. Following the trip, the Stags will return home for three home dates that include Columbia University on September 10, Niagara University on September 15, and the University of Vermont on September 20.
