FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer suffered its first setback of the 2025 campaign this evening at Lessing Field as Brown University edged the Stags by a 1-0 score. The difference in tonight's game came on a second-half goal that pushed the Bears to their second win in as many outings.
Neither team established any flow through the opening minutes of the first half as the back lines. Brown had the better of opportunities in those early minutes, putting a couple of shots toward goal but neither required any action from the goalkeeper. It wasn't until the 27
th minute that Fairfield goalkeeper
Evan Chomow had to become involved, making a diving save in the 27
th minute. He would add two more saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the visitors in check.
Fairfield created the first opportunity after intermission when
Ethan Prescott took a chance but the shot was blocked before it got to the goalkeeper. Brown's first scoring chance in the 58
th minute when a misplayed clear sprung Lorenzo Amaral, who carried the ball into the right corner of the box. He sent a cross to the other side of the box where Mads Stistrup Petersen collected the pass and finished the chance with shot into the lower left corner.
After the goal, the Stags' urgency was apparent as they began to spend more time up front, taking five of their six second shots over the final 18 minutes. Pipeloreoluwa Olanrewaju,
Alex Vaz, and
William Pierce combined for a flurry of three shots in a six-minute span that put the Brown back line on its heels.
With three minutes remaining,
Cole Dougherty created the Stags' best chance of the night when he released a shot from the left side of the box, forcing full extension from Brown goalkeeper Henrik Weiper to keep his team's one-goal advantage.
Chomow made three saves in the game while his counterpart Weiper secured one save over his 90 minutes.
"I think we were a little bit slow in the first half but built into it," Head Coach
Krystian Witkowski said. "In the second half especially after the goal, we were on the front foot and creating good opportunities and good looks. It felt like it was a going to be a tight match so credit to Brown. We will keep working and progressing as we get ready for Lafayette."
Fairfield will leave campus for its next game, traveling to Lafayette College for an afternoon game on Saturday.
