EASTON, Pa. – The Fairfield University men's soccer came up a goal short in its second road game of the year, falling to Lafayette College by a 2-1 count. The Stags record evened out at 2-2 overall with the result.
Fairfield opened the game with a strong showing up front, producing three shots in the opening 10 minutes.
William Pierce was the first player up when he took a shot in the first minute.
Alex Vaz and
Cristian Ortiz also gave it a go with shots that ended up wide of the mark.
Both teams created scoring chances over the next 10 minutes, three of which came from Lafayette. All three of the Leopards attempts were on target, required action from Fairfield goalkeeper
Evan Chomow. Pipeloreoluwa Olanrewaju was responsible for the Stags opportunity, sending a shot toward goal that was scooped up goalkeeper Eric Axtman.
The home team was the first to light up the scoreboard, putting a pair of goals on their side in an eight-minute span. Samir Dishnica connected on the first goal in the 26
th minute before Nicolas Papadopoulos doubled the advantage with his goal in the 34
th minute. Both goals were set up in the box with the shots coming from the middle. The second goal came about after a pass missed its mark, creating the chance.
Fairfield didn't wait very long to make a run at the Lafayette defense, gaining an opportunity in the 36fh minute. The Stags tallied their first goal off a corner kick when
Cameron Gerber sent the ball to the near post where
Owen Drummond was able to redirect the cross with a header that was tucked neatly in the corner.
In the second half, roles reversed with Lafayette getting the better of things offensively, setting up three shots in the opening minutes without any being on net. Fairfield was the first to put pressure on the opposition as
Drew Thompson placed a pair of shots on goal which forced Axtman to make saves.
By the end of the half, Lafayette and Fairfield took six shots but the Stags were responsible for the only three shots on goal over the final 45 minutes. The final stats showed Lafayette with a slight advantage in shots, taking 13 against 11 from Fairfield. Both goalkeepers made four saves each with Chomow making all of his stops in the first half.
The Fairfield University men's soccer team will play its next three games at home, beginning with a Wednesday night match up against Columbia University. Also included in the three-game homestand is the Stags' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener against Niagara University. The stand ends with defending national champion University of Vermont coming to Lessing Field.
