NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. –
Peyton Shields earned the win in game one and came back to earn the save in the second game, helping the Fairfield University softball team sweep Iona University this afternoon. The Stags earned the first game with a 4-2 win and the second contest with a 7-4 victory.
The Stags needed to come from behind in the opener, seeing the Gaels score the game's first runs with a single run in the first and third innings. Sara Pina was responsible for both of those runs, stroking an RBI single in her first two at-bats. She finished the game with three hits including a lead-off base hit in the seventh frame.
Fairfield provided all the support that starting pitcher Shields would need by plating four runs in the fifth inning.
Faith Camilleri opened the rally by being hit by a pitch before
Darby Weller stepped in as a pinch runner.
Quinn McGonigle placed a quality bunt that put Weller in scoring position, an opportunity of which pinch hitter
Alivia Macaluso took advantage. She lined a base hit to left field to bring home the Stags' first run and took second on the throw home.
Charli Warren put runners on the corners with her base hit, setting up back-to-back RBI singles from
Morgan Sylvestre and
Anna Paravati.
Delaney Whieldon brought home the final run with a perfectly placed bunt that brought the score to 4-2.
Shields allowed a pair of runners in both the sixth and seventh innings but the right hander managed to work her way out of both jams to record her win of the season.
The Stags jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the second game, beginning the scoring with a run in the second inning. Camilleri was responsible for the lead with an RBI single to center field, spotting starter
Alyssa Weinberg with a lead.
Fairfield tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning when McGonigle hit the first of four home runs by the Stags in this game, scoring
Ava Armuth to post a 3-0 lead. Iona secured two runs in the fifth inning as Pina offered a two-run double down the right field line to bring the deficit to a more manageable one run at 3-2.
The visitors quickly regained a more comfortable lead when Macaluso, Camilleri, and McGonigle hit back-to-back-back home runs to push the advantage to 6-2 in the sixth inning.
After Iona picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, Fairfield collected one run back when Camilleri's base hit sent home Armuth for her third run scored in the game.
Weinberg earned the win by tossing the first five innings, striking out five batters and scattering nine hits. Shields went the final two innings, surrendering one hit and two walks to garner her first save.
Fairfield returns to the diamond for its regular-season finale series at Quinnipiac University, playing a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Stags and the Bobcats close out the series with a single game on Saturday afternoon.
