Softball Opens Series With 2-1 Win Over Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Pitcher Alyssa Weinberg tossed a complete game to earn her 16th win of the season while infielder Anna Paravati collected a pair of hits and scored a run to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a 2-1 win in the opening game of a three-game series with Quinnipiac University. The victory also pushed the Stags over the .500 mark on the road, owning a 9-8 record away from campus this year.

Weinberg kept the Bobcat batters off balance for most of the game, allowing only three hits while striking out six in her seven innings of work. She yielded a base hit in the first inning but did not allow another one until the sixth inning. She lost her shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh inning when Madison Waltke hit her second home run of the season. Paravati went to work from the start, securing a single in the first inning and another one in the sixth inning.

The two pitchers were locked in a scoreless game through the first four innings. Weinberg surrendered just the first-inning single during that time while her counterpart Sydney Horan gave up two first-inning singles only. After Delaney Whieldon's base hit in that inning, Horan sent down 10 straight Stags to keep the game the team in check.

Fairfield broke the run of retired hitters in the top of the fifth inning when Faith Camilleri picked up a lead-off double to center field to put a runner in scoring position. Darby Weller entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to third base following Quinn McGonigle's sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout recorded the second out, Charli Warren was safe on a fielder's choice which bring home the game's first run.

The Stags doubled their advantage with another run in the sixth inning, a rally started by Paravati's leadoff single to center field. After taking second on a sacrifice bunt, Paravati moved over the third when Ava Armuth sent the ball up the middle to put runners on the corners. Alivia Macaluso picked up the RBI with her infield hit to the left side, bringing Paravati home and pushing the score to 2-0.

Quinnipiac cut the lead in half when Waltke homered to bring the score to 2-1 but the Bobcats could not muster any more runs off Weinberg.

Fairfield and Quinnipiac will close out the series with a doubleheader on Friday with the first game slated for 2 pm.
