Softball Ends Regular Season With Sweep Of Quinnipiac

Stags Bring Five-Game Win Streak Into Next Week's MAAC Championship

HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team picked up its second doubleheader of this week this afternoon, securing a 4-1 and a 6-0 win over Quinnipiac University on the final day of the regular season. The Stags will bring their current five-game winning streak into next week's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship hosted by regular-season Marist College beginning on Tuesday, May 6. Pairings for the tournament will be announced by the conference.

Fairfield only trailed one time in the doubleheader which came in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The Bobcats put together three singles against starter Peyton Shields with Kennedy Demott stroking the RBI base hit. Shields would not yield another run over her final six innings, scattering six more hits and allowing just one walk.

The Stags tied the game in their next at-bat, plating one run in the top of the second inning. Delaney Whieldon opened the inning with a double to the left-center field gap, and advanced to third base when Alivia Macaluso's grounder to the left side was misplayed. Faith Camilleri stepped into the batter's box and sent a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Whieldon to tie the game. Fairfield took the lead in the top of the third inning after four consecutive Stags reached base. Charli Warren started the rally with a one-out infield single, and was sent to second following Morgan Sylvestre's walk. Anna Paravati followed with a base hit to right field, loading the bases for Whieldon. The catcher picked up an infield hit to bring home Warren and push Fairfield in front.

The lead doubled in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of a two-run double from Paravati, a hit which chased home Warren and Sylvestre to bring the lead to 4-1. Shields allowed only one base runner in the bottom of the seventh, a lead off single from Madison Waltke, but retired the next three hitters to earn her fifth win on the season.

Fairfield completed the sweep by using its seven hits to score six runs en route to the victory. The Stags scored their first two runs off bases loaded free passes, a walk from Martina Guitierrez in the second inning and a hit by pitch from Morgan Sylvestre in the third to put the score at 2-0.

In the fourth inning, Warren and Whieldon stroked singles and stole a base to put runners on second and third. Camilleri brought both runners home with a two-out double over the right fielder's head to double the deficit to 4-0. Fairfield tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two-out two-run triple down the left field line from Warren, pushing the score to 6-0.

Alyssa Weinberg secured her 17th win of the season by surrendering just five hits without walking a batter in addition to her five strikeouts.
