Men's Soccer Picks Up All-MAAC Honors

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Seven Fairfield University men's soccer student-athletes received honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced its annual postseason awards on Monday.

Sean Albritton, Jordan Blunschi, Evan Chomow, Cole Dougherty, Pipeloore Olanrewaju, William Pierce, and Alex Vaz comprised the Stags grouping as Fairfield tied with Iona University for the most All-MAAC student-athletes on this year's teams.

Vaz picked up All-MAAC first team honors after sporting five goals in his 12 appearances this season, posting one game winning goal in the process. He tallied a goal in four games including a pair of goals and the game winner in Fairfield's win over nationally-ranked Marist. He also garnered a MAAC Rookie of the Week accolade on October 6.

The Stags' second team selections included three newcomers in Albritton, Chomow, and Olanrewaju. Albritton leads the team in scoring with eight goals for 16 points, netting four game winning goals so far. The forward picked up a goal in his first career postseason appearance on Sunday as the Stags defeated Niagara University in the first round of the MAAC Championship. He is a three-time recipient of the MAAC Rookie of the Week as well.

Chomow also garnered a weekly honor when the MAAC designated him the Defensive Player of the Week on September 1. The goalkeeper started 14 matches during the season, posting a conference-best .831 save percentage off 69 saves. He also ranks third in goals against average, sporting a 1.02 mark which is aided by his three clean sheets this season.

Olanrewaju has also gained acclaim for his goal-scoring prowess, netting four goals in addition to adding an assist for nine points in 17 matches. He garnered a game-winning goal when he tallied both of the team's goals in a 2-0 win over Niagara during the regular season. The forward secured one MAAC Rookie of the Week honor after scoring a goal in a win over Mount St. Mary's

On the third team, Fairfield's representatives included Blunschi, Dougherty, and Pierce. Blunschi has been a key contributor to the Stags' back line, one that has yielded just 17 goals in 17 matches. In addition to contributing in the back, Blunschi has also been a contributor up front with a pair of goals, scoring against defending national champion University of Vermont and Rider University.

Dougherty is another student-athlete who has excelled on both sides of the pitch. The defender has been part of a unit that has five shutouts on the season and that held the opposition scoreless for more than 300 minutes which included a run of three successive shutouts. Dougherty also made his mark inside the box, scoring a goal against Quinnipiac University.

Pierce remains one of the program's top offensive players over his three seasons on the pitch. This season, the midfielder has garnered three goals and four assists for 10 points, including an assist in the team's MAAC first-round win over Niagara on Sunday. He also provided the deciding goal in the team's win over Mount Saint Mary's in late October. For his career, Pierce has collected 14 goals and eight assists for 36 points.

The Fairfield University men's soccer team, under Head Coach Krystian Witkowski, continues play in the MAAC Championship. After defeating Niagara in the first round, the Stags will head to top-seeded Sacred Heart University on Thursday, November 13 for a 6 pm semifinal match. The winner will advance to the MAAC Championship match which takes place on Sunday, November 16.
