Men's Soccer Plays Yale To 1-1 Draw

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Yale University on Tuesday night, the Stags' final non-conference game of the 2026 campaign.

The Stags and the Bulldogs started the night with caution as both teams moved the ball across the pitch trying to find openings that would allow opportunity within the box. Fairfield was the first to find such space and took advantage of the chance.

Ethan Prescott and Chris Thaggard nearly worked some magic in the 14th minute with a nifty give and take that sent Prescott free about six yards on the left post. He put the game's first shot on target but a diving stop by Yale goalkeeper Constantin Jung prevented any further danger.

Fairfield's next chance would come from the penalty spot after Liam McElderry was taken down just inside the right side of the box. Massimo Murania was given the ball and the forward tucked the ball into the upper corner to give his teammates the lead at 1-0.

Yale found the equalizer in the 26th minute on a play that started on the left flank. Sven Meachem started the attack from near the left touch line, sending the ball to center box where Ryder Mills one-touched the ball toward Nick Miller. Miller finished the play with a shot to the lower right corner, tying the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs had the advantage for the remainder of the half, taking three of the final four shots over the next 20 minutes of play. One of those shots threatened but goalkeeper John DiStefano, who made his first career start in tonight's match, was equal to the task by recording the save.

Fairfield's only shot during the stretch came off the foot of Cole Dougherty, but the attempt faded wide left to keep the score even.

Both teams were able to provide ample opportunity up front in the second half with nine shots being taken between the two sides. Yale had a slight advantage with five shots, three of which required action from DiStefano.

The Stags' attempts were recorded by Elias Novina in the 50th minute, Owen Drummond in the 66th minute, Liam McElderry in the 69th minute, and Pipeloore Olanrewaju in the 88th minute. DiStefano faced 12 shots in the match and made a personal-best five saves for the Stags.

Fairfield will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 24 when the team hosts Canisius University at Lessing Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm. Prior to the game, the Fairfield men's soccer program will honor the program's seniors and graduate students.
