First-Place Stags host Iona and Manhattan This Weekend at Mahoney Arena

Fairfield is unbeaten in the MAAC at 7-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After claiming sole possession of first place in the MAAC with two wins this past weekend at Leo D. Mahoney Arena, Fairfield University Volleyball returns to its home court as the league's last unbeaten team to host Iona and Manhattan on Oct. 17-18. Admission is free for all fans to all Fairfield Volleyball regular season home games this season.

Fairfield University Stags (13-4, 7-0 MAAC)
  • The Stags are winners of eight straight overall and improved to 7-0 in the MAAC with home sweeps of Marist and Siena last weekend.
  • In the win over the Red Foxes, Fairfield hit a scorching .443 – its best hitting percentage in a match since 2013 and best in a MAAC outing since 2007.
  • Mamie Krubally was tabbed as the MAAC Player of the Week for her performance against the Foxes and Saints.
  • This season, the Stags lead the MAAC in kills per set, hitting percentage, assists per set and blocks per set. Fairfield's .269 hitting percentage is also good for 28th in the nation.
  • Individually, Maya Walker leads the conference and slots 43rd nationally with a .387 hitting percentage.
  • On the defensive side, Harlan Wyche is 78th in the country with a MAAC-best 1.23 blocks per frame.
 
Iona University Gaels (7-14, 2-5 MAAC)
  • Most recently, Iona split a home weekend as the Gaels knocked Niagara from the ranks of the unbeaten, 3-2, on Friday and then fell by a 3-1 count to Canisius on Saturday.
  • The Gaels have played four five-set matches during league play, including their wins over Manhattan and Niagara. In the non-league slate, Iona won a 3-2 match against NJIT and dropped five-set outings to Towson and FDU.
  • In addition to Towson, who Fairfield defeated in five sets on opening weekend, the Stags and Gaels also both swept CCSU prior to the start of MAAC play.
  • Iona is the MAAC's top team in aces and digs per set. The Gaels rank eighth nationally with 17.29 digs per stanza.
  • Seven Gaels have served up at least 10 aces, led by 30 from Kari Smith.
  • Avery Gaume heads the defensive effort, ranking fourth in the conference with a team-leading 4.06 digs per set.
  • Offensively, Julia Leonardo slots seventh in the MAAC at 3.20 kills per set while hitting .218 from the pins – the best percentage for a Gael with more than 100 swings.
 
All-Time Series (Fairfield leads 48-14)
  • The Stags and Gaels only met once in 2024 – a 3-1 Fairfield win in New Rochelle to improve its lead to 48-14 in the overall series.
  • Fairfield is riding a seven-match winning streak over the Gaels, with Iona's last win over the Stags coming at the Hynes Athletic Center in the final weekend of the Fall 2021 regular season.
 
Manhattan University Jaspers (2-14, 0-7 MAAC)
  • Manhattan visits Mahoney Arena in search of its first MAAC win after dropping both ends of a home weekend to Canisius and Niagara. The loss to the Purple Eagles was the Jaspers' third five-set loss of the conference slate.
  • Manhattan's victories came in straight sets over Houston Christian and Rhode Island.
  • The Jaspers are hitting .160 as a team this fall with opponents hitting .235 against them.
  • Hannah Kaczynska leads Manhattan's hitting corps with 2.98 hitting per set.
  • The back row is headed by Teresa Garza's 3.04 digs per frame.
 
All-Time Series (Fairfield leads 57-7)
  • After sweeping the lone meeting last fall, the Stags have won 20 straight meetings with Manhattan and lead the all-time series, 57-7.
  • With 64 all-time meetings, Manhattan is Fairfield's second most frequent opponent behind Siena, who the Stags challenged for the 71st time this past Saturday.
 
MAAC Notes
  • Fairfield tops the standings at 7-0 with Niagara sitting one match back at 6-1. The Stags and Purple Eagles will meet only once this season – a Nov. 7 clash at Mahoney Arena.
  • Quinnipiac and Rider are both 5-2 following a weekend that saw the Bobcats sweep Rider in Lawrenceville. A three-way tie at 4-3 between Siena, Canisius, and Marist rounds out the top half of the current ledger.
  • The top six teams at the close of the regular season will qualify for the 2025 MAAC Championship. The third and fourth seeds will each host a First Round match on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
  • The "Final Four" will convene at the home court of the top seed. The semifinals and final will be held on consecutive days between Nov. 21-24, to be determined by the host.

  • The Stags embark on a five-match road trip with visits to Quinnipiac (Oct. 24), Merrimack (Oct. 25), Sacred Heart (Oct. 28), Siena (Oct. 31), and Marist (Nov. 1).
  • Action returns to Mahoney Arena for the final time in the 2025 regular season when the Stags host Niagara and Canisius on Nov. 7-8. Fairfield will celebrate Senior Day prior to first serve with the Griffs.
