BOSTON – Four Stags recorded double-doubles to lead Fairfield University Volleyball past Holy Cross, 3-1, on Saturday at Northeastern's Cabot Center in Boston. Fairfield overcame a loss in Set 1 to win three straight stanzas and knock off the Crusaders in their first of two matches on the day.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 2-3 while Holy Cross slides to 2-4. The Stags will challenge the host Northeastern Huskies to wrap up the weekend at 5 p.m. on Saturday in Boston. Fairfield won today's opener by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-21.
The Stags' four double-doubles came from four different positions on the court. Outside hitter
Aislin Oldach posted 14 kills and 10 digs from the left side. In the middle,
Harlan Wyche controlled the net with 11 kills and 10 blocks. Setter
Zofia Sykut dished out 39 assists to go along with 10 digs, and libero
Natalie Carlin had a pair of career highs with 26 digs and 10 assists.
Oldach led the Fairfield attack with 14 kills at a .353 clip, and
Mamie Krubally put down 12 kills on .375 hitting. Wyche's career high 11 hitting came on .333 hitting in the middle.
Emma Bortolotti added nine kills from the right side, and the duo of
Sophia Nagy and
Katelyn Cook put down three apiece.
In addition to her double-double, Zykut also dumped over five kills from the setter spot. The sophomore guided the Stags to a .252 team hitting percentage.
Wyche had a hand in 10 of Fairfield's 14 team blocks. Krubally had a hand in four rejections while Oldach and Bortolotti played a part in three stuffs apiece. Carlin's 26 digs fueled the back row as the Stags limited Holy Cross to .074 hitting, including an even .000 rate in the day's final set.
Holy Cross was led by 13 kills and 10 digs from Emma Sorensen.
