Summers Wins Individual Title; Stags Named Co-Champs at SHU Fall Invite

MILFORD, Conn. – A picturesque day at Great River Golf Course set the scene for the first victory of the 2022-23 campaign for Fairfield University men's golf, and senior Colin Summers, who battled throughout the day to pull out a two-stroke lead and claim the individual title at the SHU Fall Invitational. The Stags as a team placed all five members of the Fairfield quintet within the Top-25 which helped the squad improve by two strokes collectively on day two to finish tied with the host Pioneers for the team title.

Summers, came into the final round after he led the field with a five under, 67 in the opener Sunday, before eclipsing Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim by one stroke on the front nine Monday, and scoring an equal 33 in the latter-half of the round to secure the individual victory, the first of his collegiate career.

Second for the Fairfield Five was Jason Salameno who registered a 75 at three over par in the opening frame before bouncing back with a four-stroke improvement in the final round to finish two over in a tie for seventh place with PJ O'Rourke of Fordham. Following Salameno was the first of three individuals for the squad this week in Michael McCarthy who shot up the leaderboard across the two days, carding 79 in the opener before dropping his score by 10-shots on Monday, three under for the round and four over for the tournament which placed him in a tie for ninth, earning him his first top-10, lowest round, and best finish as a Stag.

Finishing third amongst the Stags starting five was Shane DeVincenzo who notched himself a pair of 76's across the two rounds to take home a share of 16th place at eight over for the tournament, followed by both Patrick McCarthy and Killian McGinley who each earned a share of a five-way tie for 25th at 11 over par to round out the quintet. Chase Millar was the second individual to finish as he carded a 76 in the opening round and went on to finish one shot back of the top-25 at 12 over par in a tie for 30th, followed by Zachary Maloy who finished at 14 over par and tied for 40th.

Fairfield men's golf will return to action one final time ahead of the winter break Oct. 21-22 when they make their only trip out of state this fall, as they head to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Lehigh Invitational.
