WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball allowed a season-low 47 points to roll past host William & Mary, 70-47, on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. The Stags' offense was led by 15 points apiece from
Taj Benning and
Caleb Green to seal their fourth consecutive victory.
Â
With the win, the Stags improve to 7-3 on the season. Fairfield is also 2-0 in the MAAC, having recently swept Canisius and Niagara in Western New York before resuming the non-conference slate.
Â
Fairfield's 47 points allowed are the fewest since limiting Saint Peter's to 47 in last season's MAAC Championship Semifinal win. In addition, today's 23-point margin of victory is Fairfield's largest against a Division I opponent since a 78-49 thrashing of Manhattan during the 2016-17 season.
Â
"Today was our most complete game on both sides of the ball, and everybody who checked in contributed to the win," said Head Coach
Jay Young. "Our defense was outstanding and that allowed to get on a few runs and execute in transition on the offensive end."
Â
Benning and Green's 15 points apiece paced an offense that saw 10 different Stags put points on the board. Benning also shared the team high with six rebounds, while Green distributed a team-best four assists.
Â
Allan Jeanne-Rose also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
Jake Wojcik added nine points, and
Jesus Cruz and
Supreme Cook each netted six. Rounding out the offense,
TJ Long and
Zach Crisler both drained a three-pointer for three points apiece,
Jason Edokpayi added a late offensive rebound and putback, and
Christian Cevis sank a free throw for his first point as a Fairfield Stag.
Â
Cook matched Benning's six rebounds with Green and Crisler each hauling in four as Fairfield won the battle on the boards, 35-31. The Stags also held the advantage in turnovers, committing only eight while converting 15 Tribe miscues into 18 points. Wojcik had four steals and Green picked up three as a part of those 15 forced turnovers.
Â
William & Mary (1-11) was led by reigning CAA Rookie of the Year Connor Kochera with a game-best 19 points. Kochera also corralled eight rebounds for the Tribe.
Â
In addition to their four-game winning streak overall, the Stags have won their last four road games since starting 0-2 away from home with close losses at Providence and Boston College.
Â
"It takes grit and toughness to win on the road in college basketball, so I'm proud that we've been able to do that," Young said. "We'll be right back to work tomorrow to prepare for another road test at FDU on Wednesday."
Â
The Stags' Wednesday clash at Fairleigh Dickinson is slated for 7 p.m. in Hackensack, N.J.
