Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y.—It all came down to No. 1 singles on Sunday. Fairfield sophomore Kaya Gore of Izmir, Turkey, was tied at one-all with Colgate's Scott Bickel. The overall match score was 3-3.
Gore came to Fairfield with an impressive pedigree. At one point in his junior career he made a deep run in the Australian Open Juniors doubles event. Playing down under certainly must have helped him for the pressure he faced today.
Kaya closed out his Raider opponent 7-5 in the third to seal the Stag's 4-3 win.
"We came out in doubles and imposed our will and took it to Colgate," said head coach Jeff Bricker. "The singles was a grind, but we got great wins from two of our veterans, Tyler and Lewis, and Kaya came through to clinch. There's still a lot to improve upon in singles, but it's good to get the win today."
In doubles, Fairfield started strong and cruised to capture the doubles point. The first win came from the No. 2 team of Lewis Edwards and Tyler Shibles who defeated Colgates' Jack Selatti and Jack Albon 6-2. Next to win for the Stags, and securing the doubles point, was the No. 3 pair of Will Townsend and Stephan Mitrovic who bested Kun Tan and Nate Romig 6-3. No. 1 doubles went unfinished with Gore and Jonathan Olive-Blanco ahead 5-2 over Colgate's Bickel and Tyler Krantz.
In singles Fairfield's No. 3 Edwards bested Colgate's Peter Hartman, 6-3, 6-2 before Fairfield's No.6 player, Griffin Schlesinger, was defeated by the Raider's Romig 6-4, 6-4. Fairfield's No. 2, Shibles, was next to finish as he defeated Selati 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, putting Fairfield up 3 to 1. Colgate would even the match at 3-3 as its No. 5, Rohan Gupta, defeated Allan Magid, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 and its No. 4, Ablon, bested Olive-Blanco 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-1.
The Stags next travel to West Point to take on Army on March 1 at 10 A.M.
