Men's Tennis Finds Success at the Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - – Fairfield men's tennis took part in the Quinnipiac Invitational this weekend coming away with multiple wins and solid performances in both Singles and Doubles competition.
 
In A Singles, Tyler Shibles defeated Giribet Lopez of Marist (2-6, 6-3, 10-7) in the first round before falling to John Holtmann of UConn (2-6, 4-6).  Jonathan Olive-Blanco took down Hielke Moore of Quinnipiac in the first round (6-3, 3-6, 10-4). He then fell to Noah Lilienthal of Wesleyan (1-6, 1-6).  Lewis Edwards picked up a win in the first round as well defeating Yili Zheng of UConn (7-5, 7-6(1)). He was then defeated by Lars Schouten of Marist (6-4, 3-6, 3-10) who would go on to win the Singles A bracket.
 
In B Singles, Griffin Schlesinger picked up wins over Jofre Segarra of Fordham (6-4, retired) and Marist's Kian Yazdi of Marist (6-3, 6-4) before falling to the Red Foxes' Piotr Sowinski (6-4, 6-4) in the semifinals.  Jan Parizek defeated Clark Davis of Quinnipiac (6-1, 6-1) before a defeat to Fabian Mauritzson of Fordham (4-6, 6-7 (5)). Allan Magid won his match over Christian Provenzano of UConn (6-1, 6-4) but was then defeated by Axal Stern of Quinnipiac (1-6, 1-6).  Jack Sarabia also picked up a win over Alexi Watelet of Marist (6-1, 6-3). He then fell to Steven Duka of Fordham (4-6, 3-6). 
 
Jonathan Olive-Blanco won his consolation match (8-3) over Alex Makatsaria of Fordham while Kaya Gore defeated Peter Anker of Wesleyan (8-7 (7)) in consolation. Lewis Edwards also won a consolation match over Gabriel Mashaal of Fordham (8-1) and Stefan Mitrovic defeated Steven Duka of Fordham (8-3) in consolation.
 
"It was great to get all four freshmen their first collegiate victories" said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Jan and Kaya also got their first singles victories as Stags."
 
In A Doubles competition, Kaya Gore and Jonathan Olive-Blanco made it to the finals first defeating Yili Zheng and Rami Scheetz of UConn in the quarterfinals (7-5). They then took down John Oxner and Nestor Giribert Lopez of Marist (6-1) in the semifinals. They were then defeated in the finals by Noah Lilienthal and Princeton Carter of Wesleyan (6-4).  Tyler Shibles and Griffin Schlesinger also picked up a win over Finn Kemper and Max Green of Fordham (6-3). 
 
In B Doubles, Lewis Edwards and Stefan Mitrovic defeated Kain Yazdi and Alexi Watelet of Marist (6-0) in the quarterfinals. They then took down Zach Fleischman and Peter Anker of Wesleylan (6-3) in the semifinals before being defeated by John Holtmann and Christian Provenzano of UConn (7-5) in the finals. William Townsend Font and Jack Sarabia picked up a win over Piotr Sowinski and Gonzalez Bonorino of Marist (6-2) while Allan Magid and Jan Parizek defeated Alex Yu and Luke Riemann of UConn (6-3).
 
"We had a great run in doubles putting two teams in the finals of their respective draws" said Bricker. "I think doubles can be a strength for us this year. We have a bunch of guys that fly to the net which is really exciting."
 
Fairfield will return to action as they host MAAC opponent Rider on Saturday, October 5 at 12 P.M.
