FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Iona's Lou Matarazzo clubbed a three-run homer to cap off a five-run third inning and the Fairfield University Baseball team could not recover as they fell 10-3 to the Iona Gaels at Alumni Diamond. With the setback, the Stags fall to 8-11 in MAAC play with five league games remaining.
The Stags (19-24, 8-11 MAAC) opened the scoring as they started a two out rally in the first.
Mitch Williams collected his 99th career hit with a double to right center and he would later score on a triple by catcher
Kevin Radziewicz.
That would be the only scoring for the Stags until they scratched across a run in the fifth against starter Stephen Hansen. Iona (13-29. 7-11 MAAC) would plate five runs in the game-deciding third inning and blow the game open with five runs in the later innings. The Gaels scored all five runs in the third with two outs as Sean Breen singled in a pair before Matarazzo's homer.
Fairfield cut into the 5-1 deficit in the fifth when
Tim Zeng led off the frame with a triple and would score on a RBI groundout by
Ian Halpin.
Eric Cerno drove in the final run for the Stags with a pinch-hit double in the eighth.
The Stags and the Gaels will complete their series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. Before the twin bill, the program will honor their five-member senior class with Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 11:40am.
