WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team rallied from two runs down in the ninth to force extra innings, but would ultimately fall on a Brendan Bisset walk-off single in the 11th as the Manhattan Jaspers took the rubber game, 4-3.
Tom Ryan's RBI single and
Drew Arciuolo's sacrifice fly were the runs needed for the Stags (13-18, 6-6 MAAC) to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Fairfield had entered the frame trailing 3-1 before mounting the one-out rally, which started on an
Eric Cerno walk and a
Mitch Williams single.
David Sacco was able to keep the game tied during the bottom of the ninth and tenth frames, but the Jaspers (18-17, 7-2 MAAC) were able to scratch across a run as Sacco entered his fifth inning in relief. Alex Cerda started the frame with a single, and would advance to second on a two-out throwing error. That set up Bisset's game-winning hit.
The Stags opened the scoring in the third when
Kevin Radziewicz was hit by a pitch to start the frame.
Drew Blake would advance the runner with a groundout and
Dan Ryan would drive him home with a RBI single.
Manhattan would tie the game in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly before taking the lead in the fifth.
In his first time back in the weekend rotation,
Austin Pope impressed with six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out six. Sacco hurled the next 4.2 frames, allowing the lone run in the 11th.
Along with his sacrifice fly, Arciuolo drew a walk in the game marking the 40th-straight game the senior has reached base safely. Williams led the Stags with two of their eight hits.
The Stags are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Fordham at 6pm.
