BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped another close decision on Tuesday, this time the Stags were edged 4-3 by host Fordham in midweek action. The Rams would break a 3-3 tie with a pinch hit, two-out double in the bottom of the eighth by Justin Bardwell.
Â
The Stags (13-19) scored three unanswered runs to grab a 3-1 lead in the middle innings. Fairfield started that run in the fourth with the first three runners reaching base.
Drew Blake began the frame with a double and after a walk to
Tom Ryan,
Mitch Williams plated the first run with a RBI single through the right side. A few batters later, the Stags would load the bases and scratch across another run as a
Drew Arciuolo walk forced in a run. However, the Stags could not score another and stranded the bases loaded. The Stags would strand 12 runners on tonight.
Â
Jack Gethings would lead off the fifth with a home run to right, making the score 3-1 in favor of the road side.
Â
However, that would be the final scoring for the Stags despite loading the bases again in the seventh. Fordham (22-11-1) would take advantage, tying the game with an unearned run in the fifth.
Â
The Stags would strand six runners in the next three innings, keeping the score even at 3-3. The Rams would take the lead in the eighth on the double by Bardwell. The Rams almost scored a couple of batters earlier, but catcher
Kevin Radziewicz was able to track down a loose pitch and fire to the pitcher covering home to throw out a runner trying to score.
Â
Four of Fairfield's eight hits were for extra bases. Besides Gethings' homer, Williams, Blake, and Radziewicz all collected a double. On the mound,
Eli Oliphant scattered seven hits and surrendered just three runs (two earned) in his six innings.
Â
Fairfield's last five losses have all been by one run.
Â
Fairfield will return to Alumni Diamond to open up a three-game home stand against crosstown rivals Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
