FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Seven members of the Fairfield University Baseball team accounted for the squad's eight hits as the Stags used a balanced offensive and pitching display to down crosstown rivals Sacred Heart 6-3 on Alumni Diamond.
Dan Ryan was the only Stag to pick up multiple hits with the sophomore also leading the team with two RBI.
Dan Ryan drove in the first run for the Stags (14-19) when his RBI double drove in
Jack Gethings in the bottom of the first to even the score at 1-1.
The Stags would have to comeback two innings later after Sacred Heart (9-20) took a 2-1 lead on a RBI groundout by Dan Schock. Fairfield would respind in their half of the fourth by plating four runs on three hits.
Drew Arciuolo reached base for the 42nd-straight game as he led off the inning with a double. Fairfield would load the bases on walks to
Tom Ryan and Gethings.
Drew Blake would bring a runner home with a fly ball to center field that dropped in front of the outfielder, allowing Arciuolo to score. With his heads up base running,
Tom Ryan was also able to sneak out a run as he sprinted home and the throw from the cutoff man from the mound went past the catcher.
Dan Ryan would bring home another run as he squibbed a ball over to first, but no fielder ran to cover first allowing Ryan's second RBI hit.
The Stags would add a run in the eighth after
Mitch Williams singled down the right field line. Pinch runner
Tyler Gambardella would steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch. That allowed him to score on a pinch hit single by
Kevin Radziewicz.
Sacred Heart had a chance to cut deeper into the Fairfield lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases with nobody out. After a Pioneer RBI single, left fielder
Dylan Reynolds was able to gun down the trailing runner at the plate for the first out of the inning.
Ian Halpin came in to relieve and would record the final two outs.
