Box Score 2 WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. – John Signore hurled a complete game three-hit shutout in the nightcap, leading the Fairfield University Baseball team to a doubleheader split with the Manhattan Jaspers. Both contests were close as the Stags dropped the first game 3-2 and rode the right arm of Signore in the nightcap to a 1-0 victory.
Game One – Manhattan 3 Fairfield 2
Both teams responded in the opening game, with the Stags (13-17, 6-5 MAAC) scoring the first run in the top of the second on a
Dan Ryan RBI single. Manhattan (17-17, 6-2 MAAC) would answer right back in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff home run off the bat of freshman Matt Padre.
The Jaspers would take the lead in the fifth on a Fabian Pena RBI single, but
Josh Arnold would strike out the final hitter of the stanza to strand the bases loaded. The Stags would ride that momentum, tying the game on a
Dan Ryan RBI on a fielder's choice. However, the Jaspers would score on a RBI groundout to regain a 3-2 lead, which would be the final margin. The Stags would tally just one hit during the last three innings, coming on a
Drew Arciuolo single.
Game Two – Fairfield 1 Manhattan 0
In another low scoring contest, neither team could plate a run until Fairfield grabbed the lead in the fifth.
Tom Ryan would start a two-out rally by reaching on an error and would score on a Arciuolo run scoring double.
That would be the only scoring that Signore would need as he fired a three hit shutout in the seven inning contest. The junior had to work out of a couple of jams, the first coming in the second inning when Padre advanced to third with two outs. Signore would get the final batter to fly out to center.
Signore would allow just one hit the rest of the way, but it was not the hits that led to trouble in the final inning. In the seventh, Richie Barrella led off with a walk and would advance to third on an error with two outs representing the tying run. Signore would retire the final batter of the game on a groundout, to record his first career shutout.
Arciuolo led the Stags with four hits on the day, picking up a pair of base knocks in both contests.
Kevin Radziewicz also picked up a hit in both ends of the doubleheader, scoring a run in the opener.
Drew Blake started the second game and went 2-for-3 as he continues his breakout season.
The two teams will look to close out the series on Sunday at noon.
