Softball Drops Pair At USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Fairfield University Softball opened up the 2018 season with a doubleheader at USC Upstate, the first two of five games that are part of  the Upstate Classic. The Stags dropped a pair of games to the host program, falling by a 10-1 score in the opener and 8-0 in the second game.

The Spartans grabbed early leads in both games, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first of both games. In the opener, a bases-clearing double by Brittany Case was responsible for spotting the home team an early lead. Fairfield showed mettle by coming back in its next at-bat to rally for a run that cut the lead to 3-1. Alisha Marshall started the inning with an infield single which Lacey Olaff followed with a base hit to left-center field that sent Marshall to second. Cynthina Meringer put down a sacrifice bunt that chased Olaff and Marshall to second and third, respectively. Rachel Sieber delivered the Stags' first run of the season by sending the ball back up the middle that was turned into an out at first base, but could not prevent the run from scoring.

The game remained at 3-1 until the fourth inning when the Spartans put together a seven-run rally, highlighted by Megan Obier's three-run double to left center field. Pitcher Destinee Pallotto earned the opening game start and left after three-plus innings of work. The right hander surrendered 10 hits and struck out two before exiting in favor of Kristen Ball in the fourth frame.

In the second game, the Stags offense managed three hits with two of those base hits coming off the bats of Mkenna DiGuilio, who lashed a single in the third inning and followed with a double in the fifth inning. Courtney Hankins also picked up a hit with a single in the fourth inning to round out the Stags' offense. Karisa Hughen tossed the first five innings for Fairfield before yielding to freshman Lauryn Rhinehart, who pitched an inning in her collegiate debut.

The Stags will close out the weekend series by playing a pair of games at Furman University on Saturday before playing a single game on Sunday.
