Softball Edged By Furman In Series Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Seven different Stags picked up a hit but a late rally pushed Furman University past the Fairfield University softball team, 5-4.

Fairfield behind early in the game as Furman picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Vahle started the rally with a base hit while AnnaRose Borrelli ended it with a two-run homer with one out. Freshman pitcher Lauryn Rhinehart settled down and kept the home team off the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings.

The Stags came up in the top of the fifth and put together a four-run inning that allowed them to take their first lead of the season by a 4-2 count. Makenna DiGuilio opened the inning with a single but was retired at second base on Rhinehart's fielder's choice. Rachel Sieber followed with a grounder up the middle that put runners on first and second.

Lacey Olaff entered the game as a pinch hitter and rewarded Head Coach Julie Brzezinski with a single that chased home Rhinehart. Courtney Hankins finished the Stags good fortune with a three-run homer that pushed the Stags in front by a 4-2 count.

Furman tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of two Fairfield errors that led to unearned runs. With the score tied at 4-4, Furman took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of Brittany Houston's ground out.

The Stags went down in order in the top of the sixth inning and managed to put a runner on in the seventh but could not get the runner home.

Fairfield played just one game today due to inclement weather. The Stags will finish the three-game series with Furman with a doubleheader on Sunday.
