Courtney Hankins hit her second three-run homer of the season in the second game of today's doubleheader with Furman University, helping the Fairfield University softball team earn a split. The Stags won the second game of the twinbill by a 3-0 score after falling in the opener by an 8-3 count.
Fairfield scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning as
Makenna DiGuilio opened the inning with a double. After the next two hitters were retired,
Amanda Ulzheimer laced a single to center field and took second on the throw, putting two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Hankins came to the plate and launched a ball over the left center field wall to bring home three runs. Pitcher
Destinee Pallotto earned her first win of the season by tossing a three-hit shutout and fanning three hitters against just two walks.
In the opener, Fairfield also scored three runs by the Furman offense was able to put eight runs on the scoreboard to earn the victory. The home team opened the game with four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of three singles and a double to manufacture a 4-0 advantage after an inning. Fairfield cut into the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Furman error to send three runs home in the frame. Alysha Marshall was only Stag with a hit in the rally, a single that sent home the final run of the inning. The Palaidins closed out the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting together a pair of hits in the inning.
