FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Yes, the Stags have a road game. For the first time since August 23, Fairfield will travel to play a game as they make their way up to Long Island, N.Y., for a non-conference match against Stony Brook on Wednesday at 7pm. It will be the final non-conference game for the Stags, who are currently in a bye week in the MAAC ledger.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Jackie Goudreault tallied her first career goal but Niagara was able to add on to their lead, defeating the Stags 3-1 on Lessing Field. It was the first time that the Stags lost their MAAC opener since 2006, and just the third time in program history. Fairfield did have chances to get back into the game. Holly Habyan was the closest to strike, as she lined a direct kick in the first half off of the crossbar. Brenna Brown and Jenny Jacobs both had opportunities in the box, but both attempts went wide. Jenna Pike made a career-high eight saves while facing 19 shots. Niagara scored 2:31 into the contest and added another score before halftime. For the season, 12 of the 16 goals the Stags have surrendered have come in the first half.
GOOD JOB BY GOUDREAULT: This season has been a breakout year for Jackie Goudreault. The sophomore entered a game just six times last season but has made an immediate impact this year. This season, Goudreault has played 373 minutes, already 304 minutes than she saw all of last year. Goudreault tallied her first career goal against Niagara.
THE SEAWOLVES SCOUTING REPORT: Stony Brook comes into the match with a 3-5-1 record but are unbeaten in four of their last five outings. Unlike the previous opponents for the Stags, Stony Brook has not started many games quickly on the offensive side, scoring just two total goals in the first half in games this season. Raven Edwards is their go-to striker with three goals so far this season with senior captain Tessa Devereaux tallying one assist after leading the America East with seven last season during her First Team All-Conference campaign. In goal, Cara Gallagher has appeared in the net recently for the Seawolves, who have split time between their two keepers. Gallagher has earned a 1.34 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
STAGS VS SEAWOLVES: The last time these two teams met it was a historic and wild day for Head Coach Jim O'Brien. The Stags would end up winning a contest that featured two penalty kicks, a retry penalty kick, and three lead changes. The victory was the 97th win in the Fairfield career of Coach O'Brien, making him the program's all-time wins leader. Megan O'Brien, Emily Wieczorek, and Anna Borea all tallied one goal for the Stags, with Regan Bosnyack and Gabi Rosenfeld notching goals for the Seawolves. All-time this will be the ninth meeting between the two teams and the fifth on the campus at Stony Brook. Fairfield is 4-3-1 overall against the Seawolves but just 1-2-1 on the road.
UP NEXT: Fairfield has a week off before their next match against Manhattan at home on September 30, with game time at 7pm.
