Seniors Shine On Their Day

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Class of 2015 could not have written a better script.  The seniors accounted for all three goals in a 3-0 win over Canisius on Senior Day.  Ashley Small got back into the scoring column with her third career multi-goal game and Torey Camporini chipped in her second goal of the season.  Senior Megan O'Brien racked up an assist and keeper Kathleen Early earned another shutout.

“You can't script it any better,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien said.  “We had the opportunity to have them all out there in the starting lineup which was great to see and then also to have a comfortable lead at the end where we can bring them all off and get the applause and standing ovation that they truly deserve.”

Fairfield (12-3-1, 6-1-0 MAAC) got on the board in the eighth minute when Torey Camporini found the ball at her feet after the free kick from Anna Borea was deflected off a defender.  Camporini was able to finish in the back of the net for her third career tally.  It also marked the first career assist for Borea.

The Stags would take the next five shots of the contest finally poking through another goal on another through ball.  Megan O'Brien played he ball in Fairfield territory and kicked it nearly the length of the field.  After a couple of bounces, Small was able to beat her defender and score on the right side of the net.

“I just feel incredibly blessed to finally break the dry spell,” Small said.  “I haven't scored in quite some time and what better day to do it than today.”

Canisius (4-13-0, 3-5-0 MAAC) would not threaten offensively throughout the game.  Kathleen Early did notch three saves on hard shots taken by the Golden Griffins.  Katie Felegy, Jenny Piaggione, and Rebecca Lederman all notched shots on goal that Early was able to tame for her seventh shutout of the year.

Small would get on the board again in the 76th minute when she out ran the Canisius defense and unleashed a score from inside the box for her second multi-goal game of the season.  With the goal, Small is now tied for the team lead with seven goals.

The Stags out-shot the Griffins 28-6 including a 16-1 mark in the second half.  In the last two matches, the Stags' backline has allowed just one shot combined in the second halves.

Fairfield had the comfortable lead where they could acknowledge every senior during the game.  In the 83rd minute, O'Brien subbed out all nine seniors: Small, O'Brien, Camporini, Early, Emma Pichl, Michelle Coate, Michelle Kowalski, Jessica Broadbent, and Erin Pettersen who received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Fairfield took four corner kicks compared to Canisius' one.  The visiting team was whistled for 13 fouls, while the Stags recorded 10.

Although Fairfield has celebrated Senior Day, the squad does play at least one more match at Lessing Field.  The Stags welcome the Siena Saints to campus on Wednesday, October 22.  Kickoff is at 7pm.
