Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Fairfield women's soccer team restored the faith and got back to their winning ways, picking up a 2-0 win over the Manhattan Jaspers on a rainy Wednesday night. Faith Daley picked up her first collegiate goal, and Pam Coufos contributed her third goal of the season. On the defensive side, the Fairfield backline allowed two shots in the match, and none after the ninth minute.
“Our backline bounced back with a solid performance tonight,” Head Coach Jim O'Brien said. “Our senior standout Emma Pichl was back in the lineup and logged a full ninety minutes. Emma's presence was a huge shot in the arm for her teammates and helped anchor the defensive unit.”
Fairfield (11-3-1, 5-1-0 MAAC) got on the board in the 12th minute when senior Ashley Small sent a cross towards Daley who was able to finish in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
“Faith has been the model of consistency for us all year,” Coach O'Brien said. “It was great to see her score in front of her former high school teammates who were there to cheer her on.”
The Stags were not done putting the pressure on Manhattan (6-6-2, 1-3-2 MAAC), taking six corner kicks in the span of nine minutes. Fairfield would take five straight shots in the half. Daley's second attempt was saved by goalkeeper Becca Vitale, who made her second start of the season.
Fairfield got back in the scoring column in the 36th minute when Coufos took a shot from the left side on a pass from Karolyn Collins for her third goal of the season. Collins notched her team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Fairfield took all eight shots in the second half, with attempts from Cassidy Boegel, Anna Borea, and Small needing to be stopped by the Jasper keeper.
Fairfield defeated the Jaspers for the 22nd time in the 27 match series, and pushed their shutout streak against Manhattan to over 600 minutes (dating back to 2009).
In the match, the Stags out-shot Manhattan 13-2, not allowing a Manhattan chance for the final 81 minutes of the contest. Fairfield took all nine corner kicks. Kathleen Early recorded a save in her 21.5 career shutout.
Fairfield is back in action on Saturday when the squad welcomes Canisius College to Lessing Field. The team will be celebrating their annual Senior Day festivities before the match and honor the nine member class of 2015. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
