The Fairfield University women's soccer team snapped a six-game series losing streak against in-state foe Yale University with a 1-0 win on Lessing Field Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Stags to 4-4-0 on the year while the Bulldogs fell to 4-3-0.
Fairfield controlled play in the first-half, outshooting Yale 13-2 in the period, but could not break through until the final minute. Nikki Stanton (North Bend, Wash.) played a ball from the Stags side of midfield over the Yale backline to the foot of Brenna Brown (North Salem, N.Y.). The rookie dribbled towards the near post and fired the ball into the back of the net past a diving Rachel Ames (Huntsville, Ala.) with 42 seconds remaining before intermission.
Yale would outshoot Fairfield 8-5 in the second-half, but could not find the back of the net. The Bulldogs had several chances, the best of which came with 60 seconds left in regulation when Frannie Coxe (San Clemente, Calif.) blasted a shot off of the cross bar.
Stags goalkeeper Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made five of her six saves in the second half to record her first clean sheet of the fall. Ames started for Yale and made seven saves in the first-half, before giving way to Elise Wilcox (Seattle, Wash.) who made three second half saves.
Fairfield finished with an 18-10 edge in shots in the game, while Yale had the only three corner kicks of the contest. The Bulldogs were called for more fouls, 12-7, while the Stags were offside more times, 4-1.
The victory is just the third for Fairfield in the all-time series. The Stags last defeated Yale in 2008, 3-2 in overtime.
Fairfield turns its attention to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for the remainder of the regular season. The Stags travel to Jersey City, N.J. for the league opener Wednesday at 4 p.m. versus Saint Peter's. Fairfield's MAAC home opener comes on September 28 versus Marist at 5 p.m. on Lessing Field.
