Brown, Small Power Stags To 6-1 Win At Canisius

The Fairfield University women's soccer team won its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) league game, defeating host Canisius College 6-1 in Buffalo, N.Y. this afternoon. The win improves the Stags to 8-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play, while the Griffs fall to 3-12-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in MAAC play.

Brianna Smith put Canisius in front with a goal exactly 16:00 into the game, accepting a pass from Brittany Krause and beating Kathleen Early to the far post. It would be the only goal that Fairfield allowed on the afternoon.

Michelle Kowalski brought the Stags even as she put home her first goal of the season, netting a pass from Carly Beyar at the 20:34 mark. Just 16 seconds later the Stags went ahead on Ashley Small's first of the game. Off of the restart, Nikki Stanton controlled the ball and sent a pass for Small in the box that she put past the keeper to the far post.

Rookie Brenna Brown scored consecutive goals, 13 minutes part, to give Fairfield a 4-1 lead at the intermission. Shannon Fay sent a pass to the foot of Pam Coufos, who quickly crossed the ball to Brown who tallied the breakaway goal for the 3-1 lead in the 31st minute. Emma Pichl was credited with the assist on Brown's second tally, which came 91 seconds before halftime.

Erin Pettersen gave the Stags a 5-1 lead in the 79th minute when Sarah Frassetto played a long through ball and Pettersen beat the keeper low. Small rounded out the Fairfield scoring in the 83rd minute, her second of the game.

Early finished with five saves to earn the win, as she played the first 80:44 of the game for the Stags. Sophia DeVita played the final 9:16 and did not face a shot. Megan Tock allowed four goals, against one save, in her 45 minute of action. Brigid St. Leger minded the net in the second half and gave up two goals while making four saves.

Fairfield out shot Canisius 19-14 in the game and both teams had three corner kick chances.

The Stags return home on Wednesday night to host Iona at 7 p.m.
