The Fairfield University men's golf team earned a 4-3 win over Bethune-Cookman University to finish in third place at the STX Match Play hosted by Towson University. The three-day, eight-team event, played at Towson Golf and Country Club, concluded on Monday afternoon.
Scott Rainaud earned his third win in as many outings in the #7 match, defeating Emmanuel Petrich 1 up. Nick Taylor earned his first match win of the weekend, but it was the decisive point, with a 3&2 win over Rafael Abad. Fairfield earned its other points with 1up decisions for Patrick Lynch and Peter Repetto.
Eric Johnson fell 3&2 in the fifth match to Alex Clapp while Ricky Dowling dropped a hard fought 2&1 decision to Ryan Fricker. Steve Burak dropped a 5&4 match to Matthew McKnight.
Towson won the team title with a 4-3 win over George Mason, while Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Rutgers 4-3 for fifth and California University of Pa finished seventh with a 6 ½ to ½ victory over Stevenson.
The Stags will be back in action, in traditional stroke play, on September 14-15 at the Rutgers Fall Invitational.
