JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University softball team completed its 2026 regular season with its fourth consecutive shutout, edging Saint Peter's University by a 3-0 score and completing a three-game sweep of the Peacocks.
Today's shutout was a combined effort which began with
Alyssa Weinberg tossing three scoreless innings before turning the ball over to
Delaney Moquin. The freshman earned the victory by completing the next three innings before yielding to
Peyton Shields who earned the save by retiring all three batters she faced. Before exiting the game, Weinberg collected her 500th career strikeout, the third Stag in school history to accomplish that task.
The Stags pitching staff ended the regular season by tossing 22 consecutive scoreless innings, last surrendering a run against Rider University on April 26. Over those 22 innings, the Stags pitching staff gave up just 10 hits and fanned 25 batters to keep the scoreless streak intact.
Fairfield jumped out to the early lead by scoring a run without benefit of a hit. The game's first run was a result of
Sammie Dougherty reaching first after her swinging third strike went to the backstop which allowed her to reach first base. After stealing second base and advancing to third base off a wild pitch, Dougherty came around to score when
Emma Marchese's ground out drove home the run.
Cara Kochakian was responsible for the other two runs, hitting the ball over the fence in the fifth inning.
Danica Silvestri started the rally with a one-out single which Kochakian finished with her two-run blast. For the senior, the home run was her third of the season and second in the last seven games. Kochakian continues her torrid pace from the batter's box, hitting .450 (9 for 20) over her last eight games with eight RBI.
In addition to Silvestri and Kochakian,
Sarah Bielski,
Ava Armuth,
Darby Weller, and Dougherty each picked up a hit in the game. Saint Peter's managed five base runners which all came from base hits. The Fairfield pitching staff did not walk a batter over the seven innings.
The Stags will now turn their attention to the 2026 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship which begins next week. For complete coverage of the 2026 MAAC Softball Championship, please visit the tournament central page on the MAAC web site.
