HAMDEN, Conn.-The Fairfield University women's tennis team opened its 2025 Fall Season over the weekend taking part in the Quinnipiac University Invitational which has played in a "hidden duals" format meaning no team scores were kept. After beginning play on Friday in Hamden against St. Francis (Pa.) University, the Stags took on Army West Point on their home courts at the Walsh Athletic Center on Saturday as the matches were moved from QU due to the threat of inclement weather later in the day. Unfortunately Sunday's scheduled match versus host Quinnipiac was canceled due to rain.
In Friday's opener against the Red Flash, Fairfield got doubles wins from the teams of Sophia Harris and Sarah Liu (6-2), Maeve Cassidy and Regina Herrera (6-3) and Lily Malinowski and Dylin Pizzutello (6-2).
In singles action versus St. Francis, Regina Herrera picked up a comeback victory in her solo collegiate debut (4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
Saturday's play on the home hardcourts against Army West Point saw five Stags earn singles' victories and three doubles squads came out to the good.
Earning singles' wins over the Black Knights in straight sets were Anna Neyestani (6-4, 6-4), Sophia Harris (6-1, ret.), Lily Malinowski (6-4, 6-2), Maeve Cassidy ((6-3, 6-3), and Maria Gell posted a hard-fought three-set triumph (7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 1-0 (3).
In doubles, Maria Gell and Anna Neyestani (6-2), Sophia Harris and Sarah Liu (6-1) and Maeve Cassidy and Meg Harding (7-6 (3), all top their opposition from West Point.
Head Coach Jeff Brickler summed up the Stags season-opening weekend saying, "I really like what I saw out of the team. Wins will come, and we had great attitude and fight throughout the entire weekend. Congrats to Regina and Sophia on their first wins as Stags!"
The Fairfield women's tennis team returns to action in Cary, North Carolina at the ITA All-American Championships that will take place from September 20-28.
