FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Fairfield University Women's Tennis (6-10, 4-1 MAAC) secured a 5-2 victory over visiting Marist (9-7, 4-3 MAAC) on Thursday at the Walsh Athletic Center Outdoor Courts. The marathon match saw four of six singles matches decided in a third set.
Fairfield claimed the doubles point with victories at the top two flights.
Maria Gell and
Anna Neyestani delivered a 6-3 win over at No. 1, while
Sophia Harris and
Victoria Mandma provided the clincher with a 6-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot. The match at No. 3 doubles remained unfinished with
Maeve Cassidy and
Lily Malinowski closing in on a win with a 5-2 advantage.
In singles play, Marist tied the match at 1-1 with a point at No. 3 singles before Gell put the Stags back in front with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph in the No. 6 slot. The match drew even again after the Red Foxes won at No. 1, but the visitors would not earn another point as the final three matches to conclude all went deep into a third frame.
First, Neyestani earned a point at No. 2 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win. Harris went on the win the clinching tally, overcoming a first-set loss to take her contest at No. 4 by a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 count.
Nicolette Loeffler iced the team win with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 to round out the 5-2 Fairfield win.
Fairfield Women's Tennis is back in action this Sunday, April 12 with a trip to Mount St. Mary's. First serve from Emmitsburg is set for noon.
