LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University softball earned two road wins this afternoon by sweeping Siena College, edging the Saints by an 8-3 score in the first game before wrapping up the twin bill with a 4-1 decision.
Anna Paravati added to her team-leading RBI total by bringing home four base runners in the doubleheader, starting with a key two-run hit in the Stags five-run second inning to take control of game one.
In that inning, the first three Fairfield batters reached base, beginning with a lead-off single from
Faith Camilleri.
Quinn McGonigle was hit by a pitch before
Morgan Sylvestre picked up an infield single to load the bases. After a strikeout and a tag play at home following a wild pitch, Fairfield's rally seemed doom.
Martina Guitierrez drew a walk to fill the bases once again, setting up
Charli Warren's RBI single to put Fairfield in front by a 2-0 count.
Delaney Whieldon watched four pitches out of the strike zone to put three runners on the basepaths again. Paravati ripped a single to right field to double the Stags' advantage at 4-0. The fifth run came home when Whieldon scampered home on a wild pitch.
With a large lead in hand, pitcher
Alyssa Weinberg kept Siena in check for most of the game, surrendering a single run in the third inning which cut the deficit to four runs. Fairfield responded with three more runs in the fourth frame, starting with another RBI hit from Paravati. Two more runs scored on a miscue in the outfield to bring the score to 8-1.
Siena added a single run in the fifth and seventh innings, setting up Weinberg for her 13
th win of the season. She fanned eight hitters in her seven innings, scattering 10 hits.
In the second game, the Stags took another early lead with a single run in both the first and second innings. Paravati's ground out in the team's first at-bat chased home the game's first run, bringing home Warren who opened the game with a double. Gutierrez tallied the game's second run with a base hit up the middle, allowing
Morgan Sylvestre to cross the plate.
Siena cut the lead in half with a run in the second inning, collecting the run off a bases-loaded walk. The Stags earned some comfort in the fourth inning after
Danica Silvestri stroked a two-run single that plated Sylvestre and
Christina Minor.
Pitcher
Peyton Shields earned her third win of the season by tossing the complete game, yielding just five hits and one earned run over her seven innings in the circle.
