FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Today's sweep of Manhattan University provided a few accolades for the Fairfield University softball team. The Stags extended their winning streak to six games, remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, and provided Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski with her 700
th win as Fairfield's head coach.
The Stags never trailed in either of this afternoon's games, taking a 3-1 win in the first game before posting a 10-1 five-inning victory in the second game. With the wins, the team sits atop of the MAAC standings with Marist College and Iona University just behind at 3-0.
"I think we are getting more and more confident offensively," Coach Brzezinski said. "Our defense has always been solid and I am hoping it stays that way. We are starting to get more consistency in the (pitching) circle. You always try to get two of three of those in sync but right now we have all three and we will take that any day."
Fairfield found its stride right from the start, beginning with pitcher
Alyssa Weinberg striking out all three hitters she faced in the top of the first inning. The Stags rewarded her dominance with three runs in the bottom of the inning as
Charli Warren,
Delaney Whieldon, and
Anna Paravati opened the inning with singles to load the bases.
Ava Armuth brought the first run home with a grounder to the right side, which
Quinn McGonigle followed with an infield single to provide a 2-0 lead. The final run of the inning resulted from an infield error, spotting Weinberg with a three-run edge.
The junior made it stand up as she kept Manhattan off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when the Jaspers scratched across a run off a pair of hits and an error. She finished the game with seven strikeouts against just one walk and four hits, earning her eight win of the year. She has not allowed an earned run in three MAAC starts, shutting out Mount St. Mary's twice last weekend and allowing an unearned run today.
The second game saw Fairfield offense really find its rhythm by scoring runs in all four inning in which it came to the plate. The Stags opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first, a scoring chance that resulted in the team loading the bases with no outs as it did in the opening game.
Faith Camilleri was responsible for the first run with a bases-loaded walk which
Quinn McGonigle followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Stags continued to add support for starting pitcher
Chela Kovar, rallies that included a three-run triple by
Charli Warren and a two-run single from
Emma Marchese in the fourth inning. Whieldon drove home a run in the second with a base hit while McGonigle's second sacrifice fly and
Christina Minor's RBI single closed out the scoring for Fairfield.
Fairfield and Manhattan will close out the three-game series on Saturday with a single game scheduled for a 12 pm start.
