FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team extended its winning streak to seven games and remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as the Stags completed another three-game sweep in conference play with a 6-1 decision over Manhattan University.
"The team is playing confidently," Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski said. "I still don't think we have hit where we want to be offensively, but we are starting to find our groove. We have a great start to conference play and that's important because anybody can beat anybody in the MAAC."
For the third time in this series, Fairfield used an early rally to back up pitcher
Alyssa Weinberg. The Stags posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning which would be all that the junior left hander would need today.
Quinn McGonigle started the rally with the first of her two doubles on the afternoon which
Christina Minor followed with a walk. Both runners moved up on
Emma Marchese's single to load the bases. McGonigle scampered home following a wild pitch while Minor tallied the second run courtesy of
Morgan Sylvestre's base hit.
Fairfield broke the game open with three runs in its half of the third inning, piecing together four doubles in the frame.
Faith Camilleri started the parade with a double to right center, providing McGonigle with the RBI after she doubled to left field. Minor was next on the list with her two-base hit to right center, sending McGonigle home. Marchese recorded the final two-bagger of the inning, bringing Minor across home plate with the team's fifth run.
The Stags put together one more scoring opportunity in the fifth inning, scoring their final run of the game. After a lead off ground out, the next three batters reached base. Minor was the first to get on the paths with a single, followed by back-to-back walks to
Darby Weller and Sylvestre.
Charli Warren hit a ball to first base for an RBI, making the score 6-0.
Manhattan scored its only run of the game with a pair of singles which included a two-out base hit by Karissa Spring.
Weinberg registered her ninth win of the season by going the distance for her 11
th complete game. She scattered three hits and fanned six hitters on the day.
Fairfield will close out its six-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon with a MAAC doubleheader against Merrimack College. The first pitch is slated for 1 pm at Alumni Softball Field.
