Softball Drops Two Games In Extra Innings

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Fairfield University played a pair of extra innings contests, both resulting in setbacks for the Stags. UNC-Greensboro posted a pair of runs in the 10th inning to earn a 4-2 decision while Charleston Southern University walked off with a single run in the bottom of the eighth.

Fairfield and UNC-Greensboro were scoreless through the first seven innings before the teams began to find their way in extra innings. The Spartans scored in the top of the eighth and ninth innings but the Stags were able to stave off both rallies.

In the bottom of the eighth, Charli Warren was placed on second to start the inning, setting up a sacrifice from Morgan Sylvestre to send her to third base. Faith Camilleri followed with a double to right field to bring home the tying run.

UNC-Greensboro grabbed the lead once again in the top of the ninth before Fairfield managed to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. Delaney Whieldon was the Stags' runner at second to begin the inning but was still there when the next two batters were retired. Quinn McGonigle provided the needed two-out RBI single to send the game into the 10th inning.

The visitors secured the lead for the final time with a pinch-hit two-run home run over the center field fence to collect the win by a 4-2 count.

In the night cap, Fairfield overcame a three-run deficit to send the game into extra innings for the second time today. Charleston Southern scored its first run in the second inning with a base hit and added more runs with a two-run homer over the center field wall to push the advantage to 3-0 after five innings.

The Stags mounted its game-tying rally in the sixth inning which began with Christina Minor's solo home run to center field to cut into the deficit. Caroline Walls kept things going when she laced a single that chased home Warren to bring the score to 3-2. Camilleri completed the come back with an RBI single that brought home Walls to knot the score at 3-3.

The game remained level until the bottom of the eighth inning when Charleston Southern scored off an RBI single that gave the victory to the Buccaneers.

Fairfield will continue play in the CSU Round Robin with another pair of games on Saturday. The Stags will open the day against UNH-Greensboro beginning at 10 am before battling Charleston Southern at 12:30 pm.
