CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Fairfield University softball team picked up a split at the CSU Round Robin, falling to UNC-Greensboro by a 6-0 count before coming back with a 7-2 win over host Charleston Southern.
Alyssa Weinberg put together another solid outing in the pitching circle, winning her fifth game in seven decisions against Charleston Southern. The lefthander fanned seven hitters and scattered seven hits through her seven innings of work, not allowing a run in the final five innings of the match up.
While Weinberg handled the pitching,
Faith Camilleri used her bat to propel the Stags to the win. The graduate student posted a pair of home runs including a two-run shot in the seventh that sealed the victory. She also launched a solo shot in the third inning, giving her three RBI for the contest.
Delaney Whieldon also contributed three RBI in the game, all of which came from her home run in the second inning that put the Stags in front for good.
Danica Silvestri also enjoyed a solid effort in the batter's box with a pair of hits and a run scored against the Buccaneers.
The Stags took the lead in the top of the first when
Charli Warren led off by drawing a walk. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch placed her on third, allowing her to come home off
Anna Paravati's fielder's choice. After Charleston Southern tied the score in the bottom of the inning, Whieldon recorded her three-run homer in the next frame, bringing home Warren and
Morgan Sylvestre who both walked.
Charleston Southern responded with one run in the bottom of the second with a solo home run which was quickly matched by Camilleri's lead off blast. There wasn't any more scoring until Camilleri secured her second homer of the day in the seventh inning.
In the opening game, Fairfield's offense picked up four hits in its 6-0 setback to UNH-Greensboro, which improved its overall record to 20-7 with the decision. Warren led off the game with a single for the team's first hit, followed by
Christina Minor's double in the second inning,
Alivia Macaluso's base hit in the fifth, and Minor's single in the sixth.
Charleston Southern did most of its damage in the fourth inning, plating four runs off four hits. Samantha Beck had a role in the rally, accounting for half of the runs with her two-run homer.
Fairfield will play closer to home for its next game when it heads to Yale University for a single game on Wednesday afternoon. The stay in the Nutmeg State will brief since the Stags play a three-game set at Mount St. Mary's over the weekend which starts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for both teams.
