Softball Drops Pair At Hatter Classic

DELAND, Fla. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Hatter Classic, hosted by Stetson University. The Stags were edged by a 2-0 score against Wofford College before dropping an 8-1 to Bethune-Cookman University in the nightcap. Charli Warren paced the Stags with three hits in the two games, picking up one in each contest.

Fairfield opened the game with a rally which started with Morgan Sylvestre getting hit by a pitch. After the second out was recorded, Delaney Whieldon reached on a fielder's choice that sent Sylvestre to second base. Anna Paravati stroked a base hit to load the bases before the Stags were retired on a strikeout. Wofford put together a run scoring opportunity in the bottom of the inning with a pair of single but pitcher Alyssa Weinberg struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

The Terriers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning, opening the frame with a pair of base hits. The two runners moved up a base with a double steal, setting up the game's first run. A grounder from Brianna Stanley brought home the game's first run. Wofford added to its run total in the fourth inning buoyed by a leadoff single by Havalynn Abernathy followed by a double to left center field by Gracie Parker. 

Both teams managed only one more base runner in the game, beginning with Charli Warren's single in the fifth. Wofford's Kate Platte answered with a one-out single in the bottom of the inning before a pop up and fly ball to the outfield ended the inning.

Weinberg finished the game with four strikeouts, giving the left hander 12 strikeouts in her two starts this season. With the win, Wofford improved to 6-2 while the Stags dropped to 1-2.

In the second game, Bethune-Cookman took an early lead with a pair of second-inning runs, using two run-scoring singles to give the team a 2-0 advantage. Fairfield cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth inning, starting a two-out rally that began with Ava Armuth drawing a walk. Quinn McGonigle sent Armuth into scoring position with a base hit through the left side of the infield. Armuth came around with the Stags' lone run of the game when Danica Silvestri picked up her first RBI of the season.

Bethune-Cookman took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five unearned runs to push its advantage to 7-1. After the miscue, Bethune-Cookman was able to string together three hits and draw three walks to set up the scoring. Brianna Velazquez highlighted the inning, registering a two-out, two-run single to close out the scoring. The team added one more run in the with a fielder's choice grounder.

Fairfield closes out its three-day stay at the Hatter Classic with a single game against Wofford on Sunday at 10 am.
