DELAND, Fla. – A first-inning rally was the difference in today's softball game between Fairfield and Wofford. The Terriers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and those runs held up in a 3-0 setback for the Stags.

Wofford opened the inning with a pair of singles followed by an RBI double from Hope Ingle to push the Terriers in front, 1-0. After inducing a ground out that did not produce a run, Havalynn Abernathy's fielder's choice did bring home the team's second run. Ingle was responsible for the third run, crossing the plate on a throwing error from a steal attempt by Abernathy.

The first 11 Fairfield hitters were retired before Anna Paravati broke through with an infield single with two out in the fourth inning. Faith Camilleri came up with the only other Fairfield hit, a leadoff single in the top of the fifth inning.

Wofford put runners on base in every inning except for the sixth frame. Grace Conrad earned the start for Fairfield but yielded to Peyton Shields in the first inning. Shields finished up the game by pitching five-plus innings and allowing four hits while fanning a pair of hitters.

Fairfield will return to the diamond next weekend with another road trip. The Stags will travel to Georgia Southern University for a three-day event. The team will open with single games against Campbell University and Georgia Southern on Friday before taking on Campbell and Oakland University on Saturday. The visit ends with one more contest against Oakland on Sunday morning.
