Men's Soccer Posts Third Straight Clean Sheet Against Quinnipiac

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The month of October was certainly good to the Fairfield University men's soccer team. The Stags completed an unbeaten month with tonight's 2-0 win over Quinnipiac University in their regular-season home finale, giving the team a 4-0-3 mark over the last four weeks.

"I am incredibly proud of the guys with seven games in a row unbeaten," Coach Witkowski said. "We controlled the game in a lot of different phases and elements. I think we have become a difficult team to play which is a testament to the guys coming together and buying into what is Fairfield culture. It's always a difficult game against Quinnipiac. They are a very good side and are coached well so I was happy to come out with the three points."

More importantly, the victory stamped the Stags ticket to the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament which begins on November 9. The team is currently in a tie for second place with Siena College with one game remaining on the schedule.

You would have to go back to the 2018 season to find a better month of October in the Fairfield men's soccer annals. That year, the Stags posted a 7-0-2 on its way to an unbeaten MAAC regular season.

This year's edition added another game to its unbeaten streak, reaching seven games with a 4-0-3 mark during the stretch. And, the team did it as it has pretty all season long, lock-down defense with some offensive magic at just the right time. Fairfield secured its third straight shutout behind the return of goalkeeper Evan Chomow. Teammate Viktor Nikolov was responsible for the first two clean sheets during this current run.

Chomow showed little effect from being out of the lineup for the last three matches, making five saves including four in the second half. While the Stags defense was frustrating the Bobcats, the offense was finding its footing inside the Quinnipiac box.

Head Coach Krystian Witkowski witnessed a little role reversal tonight as Cameron Gerber, who is among the nation's leaders for assists, turned the tables and recorded the game-winning goal. And, William Pierce, who has been known for finishing scoring opportunities during his career, was the playmaker for Gerber as well as for Cole Dougherty who netted his first goal as a Stag to provide some relief from Quinnipiac's late pressure.

The first goal developed through the play of Pierce, who worked the ball down the left channel and broke toward the left side of the box. He sent a pass that skipped across the box until it found the foot of Gerber. The junior sent the ball to the near post where it beat a diving goalkeeper to bring the score to 1-0 in the 69th minute.

Later in the half, Pierce sent another ball into the box off a corner kick where Dougherty rose above the defense and headed the ball into the far corner in the 75th minute
Down 2-0, Quinnipiac began to push forward in a desperate attempt to erase its deficit. The Bobcats worked its way to five shots, two that sailed wide, one that hit the crossbar, and two which required action from Chomow.

The Stags will finish the regular season with a 7 pm match at Sacred Heart University on Wednesday, November 5.
