Men's Soccer Earns Draw With Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team finished up the regular-season with its unbeaten streak intact, extending the eight-game string with a 2-2 draw against Sacred Heart University on the road. The Stags will now await to see who their opponent when they host a first round match in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on Sunday.

Both Fairfield and Sacred Heart showed grittiness in the match as both had to overcome a one-goal deficit to finish in the draw. The Stags were the first to grab an advantage with a first-half goal that started from inside the Fairfield defensive third.

Cameron Gerber was able to run down a loose ball and send it deep inside the Sacred Heart side of the pitch. Sean Albritton was able to track down the ball and push the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper to put Fairfield in front by a 1-0 count in the 11th minute.

Sacred Heart began to push forward with more urgency in the first half, setting up multiple opportunities that led to eight shots. Three of those tries were on target but handled by goalkeeper Evan Chomow without any further danger. Fairfield also created a few opportunities after the goal but none required action from Sacred Heart goalkeeper Luca Marinelli.

The Pioneers were the first to put the ball in the back of the net in the second half, earning a free kick just outside the box in the 64th minute. Danny Istambouli stood over the ball and tucked the ball just inside the left post to tie the game at 1-1.

The home team continued to build on its early momentum and create more chances inside the box. In the 67th minute, the Pioneers struck again with a well-placed shot inside the left post again, this time coming off the foot of David Garcia Gallego. The senior posted his fifth goal of the game to put Sacred Heart in front for the first time at 2-1.

Fairfield was just as successful inside the Sacred Heart box as the Stags would register a dozen shots in the second half. Once again, Albritton would some magic in the box and release a shot from the top of the box that skipped past the goalkeeper to bring the match back to even at 2-2.

The Stags finished the match with 16 shots, one more than Sacred Heart. Chomow made three saves during his 62 minutes in goal before yielding to Viktor Nikolov who made one stop. Marinelli also made one save during his 77 minutes while Nate DiLoreto picked up two saves in his 23 minutes of work.
