Bakaite Claims Sweep Sunday at Bryant

Box Score

CUMBERLAND, R.I. - Paulina Bakaite walked away with a pair of victories Sunday afternoon, highlighting a closely contested match at Bryant that saw five of the six singles flights go to three sets, with the hosts claiming a 6-1 victory in the match.

"We came out slow in doubles and it cost us," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Losing five three-setters is rare, and we battled in singles, but just couldn't get over the hump."

The Bulldogs opened the day with a win at No. 3 doubles, before the Stags countered with a topflight victory from Bakaite and Sarah Liu by a final of 6-4 to level the round at one. Bryant would take the second duel by the same scoreline to take the doubles point.

In singles action, Bakaite in the No. 1 flight was the only contest to finish in straight sets as she won 6-2, 6-1, dropping just three games on the way to her __ win of the season. A trio of Stags would go the distance in the middle of the lineup, playing a full third set after splitting the first two in their respective matches, with the No. 5 and No. 6 flights being decided by tiebreak.

"We know we need to come out with better energy and will work to correct the little things before Thursday's match with SHU," said Coach Bricker.

Fairfield women's tennis is back in action Saturday when they host Sacred Heart in what is scheduled to be the final indoor match of the year at the Tennis Club of Trumbull.
