OCEAN VIEW, N.J. – A trio of top ten finishes highlighted a strong start to the spring campaign for Fairfield University men's golf, which finished second out of seven schools this weekend at the South Jersey Spring Kickoff at Shore Gate Golf Club.
The Stags, who finished just five strokes back as a team of first-place La Salle, narrowly edged out MAAC foe and host school Iona by two shots to claim their second place spot.
Patrick McCarthy highlighted the weekend as he remained within the top-five for much of the weekend, finishing in a tie for the fifth spot with a pair of 77's on the Par-72 course to finish at plus 10 in the 53-player field. He finished alongside Killian McGinley who improved his score by four strokes across the two days, carding a three-over 75 in the final round this afternoon, a four-spot jump on the leaderboard.
Michael McCarthy finished the season opening tournament one shot back of that pairing with a three stroke bounce back Sunday as well, notching a 76 to finish at 11 over par in a share of ninth place. Jason Salameno was another Stag to find his groove in the second round, improving by 10 shots in the finale to score a 75 and place tied for 23rd in the field. Competing as individuals this weekend, Chase Millar and Zachary Maloy both placed in a four way for 26th on the leaderboard, followed by Shane DeVincenzo who rounded out the Fairfield Five in a tie for 35th.
Fairfield men's golf now has three weeks to prepare for its second tournament of the spring, a trip to the Seaside Golf Links in Ocean City, Md. to take part in the 2023 Battle at Rum Pointe Mar. 25-26.
