SOUTH KENT, Conn. – Killian McGinley stole the show in rounds one and two Saturday at Bulls Bridge Golf Course and paced the Fairfield University men's golf team for the second week in a row, finishing tied for eighth place in the 95-golfer field at the Hartford Hawks Invitational Tuesday.
Monday saw McGinley top the leaderboard in the first of two rounds played on the day, and as a team the Stags were tied with the University of Central Florida (UCF) for the lead. Another stellar round by the Fairfield senior saw him card his second round below par to score a 67 (-5) and 69 (-3), placing him tied for second in the field heading into Tuesday, with his first-round score being tied for the lowest round of his career. McGinley would wrap the weekend at an overall five under par placing him in a two-way tie for eighth place.
Joining him in the top-25 was Colin Summers who opened the tournament with a 72 in the opening round before a two-stroke improvement in the second to sit at two under for the day. In his final round he would shoot a 74 to finish even overall, and in an eight-way tie for 16th place, which helped the Fairfield five to finish sixth out of the 16 schools in the competition.
Patrick McCarthy shot a 73 and 72 on day one before carding another round at one-over to close the tournament at two over par and earning a piece of 32nd place, while Jason Salameno finished tied for 57th and Zachary Maloy finished tied for 78th to round out the Fairfield quintet. As the lone individual for the Stags this weekend, Michael McCarthy in Fairfield debut opened at three-over par before bouncing back with a pair of even rounds to close the invitational and take home a share of 39th place.
Fairfield men's golf will have a short break before they are back in action this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25 for The Macdonald Cup hosted by Yale University from The Course at Yale.
