Box Score NORTH HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of wins in the early portion of the day Sunday saw Fairfield University men's tennis capture the doubles point, but fell 4-3 to Niagara. The Stags and Purple Eagles opened the day at the WAC Tennis Courts, but the match was postponed due to rain shortly after the conclusion of the doubles round.
"Credit to Niagara, they played tough and took it to us today," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Very disappointed to be where we are right now, but we need to start playing tougher and pick ourselves up. We get another chance to prove it on Thursday at Marist."
Niagara claimed the top flight to open doubles, before Kaya Gore and Will O'Brien captured the No. 2 duel, 7-5 for their second win together this season. With the round level 1-1, Charlie Morkel and Andrew Immink combined to take the No. 3 match, 6-4 to claim the point for the Stags.
In singles play, Gore completed a sweep of the day for himself with a straight set win in the top flight, 6-4, 6-3, as he improves to 16-3 in solo play this season. After falling in his first set 3-6, Morkel would earn the final win of the day for the Stags at No. 2 singles, taking the final two sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Fairfield men's tennis is back in action Thursday when they head to the Empire State to take on Marist. First serve between the Stags and the Red Foxes is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
